The Vygotsky Institute is recognised internationally as the central place for scholarship in cultural-historical theory. The Institute holds the archives of the unpublished and published manuscripts of Lev Vygtosky, and is therefore an important research site for furthering scholarship in cultural-historical theory.

Professor Alexander Surmava is the former Head of the Department of Practical Psychology at The Vygotsky Institute of Psychology, Russian State University of the Humanities. Professor Alexander Surmava is a leader in the current use of psychology and philosophy going back to Lev Vygotsky. Alexander has worked previously with Evald Illyenkov and Vasiliy Davidov and is currently working under Elena Kravtsova, the granddaugher of LS Vygtosky. Professor Surmava has played a central role in furthering cultural-historical theory through his detailed analysis of the philosophical and theoretical writings of Spinoza, Illyenkov and Davidov in relation to Vygotsky’s work.
